MOAA supports High School JROTC and College ROTC programs in several ways.  The Chapter presents the Leadership Medal and a small monetary stipend to a JROTC Cadet at each school selected by the JROTC faculty as having demonstrated outstanding leadership potential.  We reach from Georgetown to Temple, and west of I-35 to Copperas Cove.  We also present a Leadership Medal and monetary stipend to a Cadet at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor (UMHB) and at Texas A&M University-Central Texas (TAMU-CT).

Our Scholarship program provides scholarships to high school students who will be enrolling in ROTC at the college level.  In addition to our high school scholarships, we also present the Colonel Jack Oliver Scholarship to an outstanding Cadet at UMHB and the Colonel Bob Gosney Scholarship to an outstanding Cadet at TAMU-CT.

We also present a set of Second Lieutenant “Gold Bars” to each new Lieutenant commissioned at UMHB and TAMU-CT.  Since 2002, CenTex MOAA has awarded more than $36,000 in scholarships to ROTC students. Recipients of these scholarships are required to enroll in ROTC as part of their college curriculum.

For the academic year ending May 2022 the CENTEX Chapter will be awarding three (3) competitive scholarships to graduating High School students in the Central Texas Area, one for $2,000 and two for $1,500.

To compete, applicants must submit:

  • High school transcript through the first semester of their senior year

  • A listing of all extracurricular activities in and out of school to include any employment

  • Letter of recommendation from a school faculty or staff member

  • Essay of at least 750, but no more than 1,500 words on the topic of “What must a leader be, know and do."

Applications are due no later than 31 March 22 to Lt Col (Ret) Bill Nance, 1312 Sparrow Trail, Copperas Cove, TX 76522.

Selection will be made by a committee of CENTEX Chapter members.

For more information see your high school counselor or JROTC Instructor, or contact the Centex MOAA Scholarship Chairman, Lt Col (Ret) William Nance at (254) 415-5269 (Cell) or email wnance@hot.rr.com
